Split to Hvar and Back: Ferry or Catamaran?

Updated October 16, 2026 · 5 min read

Passenger vessel crossing blue water towards a stone harbour on Hvar

The short answer. Take a passenger catamaran when you are staying in Hvar Town and travelling without a car. Take the Split–Stari Grad ferry when bringing a vehicle, when its schedule fits better, or when Stari Grad is your destination. “Hvar” can mean the island or the town, and confusing the two ports is the mistake that disrupts most plans.

Two ports, two jobs

The direct fast service reaches Hvar Town and carries foot passengers. You arrive beside the historic centre, which is ideal for a short stay. The vehicle ferry runs from Split to Stari Grad on the north side of the island. Jadrolinija describes the crossing as roughly two hours and confirms that a ticket on this route reserves a place on the chosen departure. Always check the current timetable because sailings vary by season.

Stari Grad port is not Hvar Town. You still need a bus, taxi or car onward. Check that connection before buying the sea crossing, especially for a late arrival. The cheapest or latest sailing is not useful if the final transfer no longer runs.

Booking the return

Buy peak-season tickets early and read the operator’s boarding instructions. For a vehicle, enter its correct category and dimensions and check any rental-company restriction on ferries. Foot passengers should still allow time to find the right berth in Split’s busy port.

Weather and operational changes can affect fast services. Keep the booking contact details available and avoid placing a flight or fixed international connection immediately after the last plausible return. A buffer or final night in Split is calmer than relying on one sailing.

Do you need a car?

Not for a stay centred on Hvar Town, nearby beaches and boat trips. A vehicle becomes useful when the holiday includes Stari Grad Plain, Jelsa, villages and several distant coves. If you decide to drive, compare car hire for Hvar, then confirm pickup, excess, fuel policy and ferry permission with the supplier.

Our recommendation

For most first-time visitors without a car, book a direct catamaran to Hvar Town and a separately checked return. Use the Stari Grad ferry deliberately, not because its destination also contains “Hvar”. Confirm both sea and onward transport on the operator sites shortly before travel.
